Outsmart at DEMO: Converged telephony

SmartFMS (Fixed Mobile convergence Solution) is a solution that allows telecommunications carriers to cross markets. In their demo, Outsmart showed a conventional telephone, a "soft" phone running on a laptop, a VOIP deskset, and a cellular phone. Placing a single call rings multiple devices, providing greater flexibility for the recipient. 40% of all calls are received indoors for example, where a conventional phone is available. Taking the call on that device saves minutes on the cellular calling plan and generally provides better call quality as well. Not an end-user solution but a great technology for service providers to deliver better and more flexible service.

LiveDeal at DEMO 2005

livedeal1
LiveDeal claims that they combine "the best of eBay and Craig's List" to generate local classified ads that can be added to any web site or blog. LiveDeal Listings Creator draws on a database containing more than 100,000 classified listings that are selected based on criteria including zip code, city, and product category. A LiveDeal affiliate site logs into the LiveDeal portal, selects their ad criteria and then copies and pastes autogenerated code into their website or blog. The LiveDeal demo showed a Blogger.com site that had added classifieds to their blog.

ImpactEngine at DEMO 2005

impact1
ImpactEngine is a hosted multimedia production solution that allows an online multimedia presentation to be built in less than 10 minutes. In fact, they did it live on stage in the last four minutes of their DEMO presentation. They selected from pre-designed backgrounds, music tracks, Flash introductions, text captions, and more. Once you've made all of your selections, your multimedia file is generated. Because Impact Engine is template driven, a company can provide exactly the content elements they want their employees to use. The multimedia can be delivered over the web, as an e-mail attachment, and for offline viewing.

WhatCounts shows the Blog Unit appliance at DEMO 2005

blogunit
WhatCounts introduce a "blogging appliance" for business. A rack-mounted appliance, BlogUnit provides blogs, podcasts, and other content publishing capabilities in a plug-and-play box. The WhatCounts team "borrowed" content from Scoble, Chris Pirillo, and Steve Rubel and "threw together" a blog in a matter of minutes. BlogUnit addresses the security, authentication, workflow management, and approval processes required for business blogging. In the demo, the WhatCounts team built a blog for a mythical airline company and demonstrated how the approval process and permission systems allows content to be reviewed prior to publishing. Great DEMO line: "I bet Google wished they had BlogUnit in place a few weeks ago when Mark Jen started blogging." Cool DEMO trick: using a rules-based approach, the WhatCounts BlogUnit selectively grabbed some of Scoble's content appropriate to the topic they were interested in. As Jason just mentioned to me, you do lose some of the "blog-iness" with this filtering but it's a big concern for businesses getting into the blogging space.

iUpload at DEMO 2005

iupload
Perspectives addresses one of the biggest issues facing people creating online content who participate in a number of different online communities: cross platform publishing. What Perspectives does is "normalize" the content and allow it to be posted to any number of different online platforms (e.g. Tribe, eBay, a blog). iUpload demonstrated how a bank is using Perspectives to create secure blogs to communicate individually and securely with each of their customers. Look for a video interview with iUpload later today.

Jambo Networks at DEMO 2005

Jambo networks showed a totally cool idea for conferences like DEMO and other social networking spaces. Sign up for the service and build a  profile and Jambo finds people at the show with similar interests over a local WiFi network or the net. You can IM someone and arrange to connect. Jambo works on PCs, Macs, PDAs, and phones. Jambo's initial partners are conferences, universities, and WiFi hot spots. Jambo announced they are looking online social networking partners. Cool DEMO moment - my good friend Buzz Bruggeman showing up in the Jambo demo.

Convoq at DEMO 2005; Outlook and Social Text integration

convoq1
ASAP Express is a free web conferencing tool. ASAP includes tools for audio, video, PowerPoint, screen sharing, chat, and file sharing. Cool DEMO trick - an audience member called in to the Convoq demo and established a real-time video chat (there were some technical difficulties with the audio but it was a huge hit). While the demo was going on, a second Convoq demonstrator downloaded the app, imported all of his contacts from Outlook and his IM client and was up and running. They also showed integration with Social Text Wiki. Very cool stuff and, did we mention it's free?

DEMO shootout: Pluck vs. Onfolio

Shootout: Pluck vs. Onfolio

Both of these tools install into the browser and provide the ability to search, collect, organize, and subscribe to (via RSS) information. Check the Office weblog for a recent review of Onfolio . Both applications provide the ability to publish your information to share research with others.
pluck
Pluck (above) is a combined search and RSS tool. Pluck's publishing paradigm uses a hosted web server that allows you share a personal Pluck folder by making it public for others to view online or subscribe to via RSS. AT DEMO, Pluck announced the Pluck Online Edition - a free, web-based version of their solution accessible from any browser. Cool DEMO line: "Pluck is available for three easy payments of free, free, and free."

Onfolio demonstrated the business case of an investment banker (Steve). Beginning with the integrated RSS feed reader, Steve searches his overnight feeds, finds a relevant article and, with one click, e-mailing it to a client. Then Steve shares web pages with colleagues by saving a local copy of an interesting web page and then sharing it with another Onfolio user. Steve also adds RSS feeds to his Reading List for later review and then uses Onfolio's built-in search to find an article he had filed based on keywords and metadata attached to the article. Onfolio also showed how a snippet of text from a web page can be captured, highlighted, and annotated. Steve set up a persistent search against a set of criteria that dynamically updates as new content arrives in the aggregator. Finally, Steve dragged and dropped content from Onfolio directly into a Word document he was building.

Online & Groupware at DEMO 2005

tapp
TAPP claims to be a "Google for you life", storing all of your online content (e-mail, calendar, contacts, and common office documents), regardless of format, and allowing you to access from any connected device. Online & Groupware demonstrated TAPP working on the web and on a smart phone. Cool demo trick: Upload a photo received on the phone directly to a blog via the TAPP server. Cool demo line: "We’re moving from computing to networking and the world is my network."

NEW: Security Solutions at DEMO 2005

outboxer
Outboxer is a set of e-mail filters that scan outgoing e-mail and displays alerts that allow the sender to either edit their message or cancel sending it. Outboxer also flags personal e-mail so that it can be removed from the server after being sent, reducing archive sizes since government regulations for retaining e-mail do not apply to personal messages - only to business correspondence. Outboxer can also flag inappropriate email messages and confidential information. The alerts the system popped up looked to be easily understood and provided specific information about why sending a particular message might be a really bad idea.

Fortiva showed it's e-mail archiving and compliance monitoring solution now delivered as an appliance that can be installed locally (most of their competition only provide hosted solutions) addressing bandwidth and potential privacy issues. Fortiva looks like another Microsoft Office 2003 application, presenting a familiar user interface.  The application can search through archived email comparing it to compliance policies and generating expert reports showing potential violations. In addition to these rules-based processes, Fortiva's software also allows you to search through e-mail messages and attachments for any keywords as well.
iplocks
IPLocks (above) Information Risk Management provides a monitoring dashboard that provides alerts when security policies are violated, both in real time as well as historically. Although the acting in the demo was a bit cheesy, it did a good job of showing off how the system can alert information security staff when an employee is demonstrating out-of-policy behavor patterns.
metavize
Metavize provides EdgeGuard (above), a secure solution for small businesses (up to 1000 employees) that offers a dashboard for a variety of point solutions" including antivirus, antispam, web content filtering packet attacks, and rogue protocols. Each point solution can be purchased separately at the Metavise online store and instantly added to the dashboard. A single command downloads and installs all applicable updates. EdgeGuard will be available next month.

Cloudmark's SafetyBar monitors e-mail for spam and fraud attacks using a knowledgebase built by its user community. Cloudmark scans incoming and outgoing e-mail messages for phishing attacks and stops known frauds form arriving or departing. Cloudmark showed off its new Phishing Intelligence Center - a web knowledgebase of phishing attacks. Also new is user profiling which gives greater weight to frauds reported by power users who earn that ranking based on the volume and accuracy of their reporting.

Hailstorm guards against web application attacks - a vector responsible for thousands of attacks and millions of dollars in loss every day. Hailstorm uses a comprehensive policy library to check your web application code and highlight any issues in code, logic , and other parameters to ensure your application is as secure as possible. After auditing your code, Hailstorm generates a remediation report that highlights potential vulnerabilities so that your development team can address them.

Video: MDA at DEMO 2005

In this, our second video (right mouse click and download for best result) from this morning's session at DEMO@15, MDA demonstrates the ISM 3D modeling scanning camera (made by the people who developed the robotic arm for the Shuttle). To demonstrate, the presenter says, "If I shoot my partner, BOOM (he drops to the floor) and scan the scene, in a matter of seconds, we can generate a 3D model of the scene."

A great demo showing some amazing new technology. Read the post here.

Video: iControl Networks at DEMO 2005

 icontrol1
Here is our first video (right mouse click and download for best result) from DEMO, just a couple of hours after iControl Networks showed their home control and automation system you can watch it here--almost live! iControl is run from a web portal, allowing you to monitor your home or business remotely.

The video is six megs, and pretty solid audio and video for that size. We are going to put up higher resolution videos later, but it takes a long time to rip them so we figured we would put up four lower resolution ones now.

Read Marc's origional thoughts on iControl.

introNetworks view of DEMO 2005

introNetworks is one of the sponsors of this year's DEMO event. They offer a social software solution to allow conference (or other event) attendees to register, create a profile, and map other attendees based on similar areas of interest. Here's what DEMO@15 looks like from introNetworks' perspective. Red pushpins represent attendees who have attached a photo or video to their profile. The system also provides an internal messaging system to allow attendees to contact each other to arrange meetings at the event.

introNetworksThe introNetworks team did a Hot Seat  60 second demonstration of how their technology works in the morning session. Describing a rich application solution in 60 seconds is a real challenge but they had the best presentation in the morning set. They asked everyone in the room to stand and then asked people to sit down, based on answers to questions like, "Do you work for a Fortune 500 company?". After the questions were asked and most of the attendees had been seated, those left standing were identified as "the money" - venture capitalists and business owners. Awesome job!

NewTek, Inc. at DEMO 2005

Newtek DEMO'ed TriCaster - a full video production solution in a small box that costs under $5K. So far, NewTek wins the "Statement of the Obvious Award" - their slogan is "If it's not live - it's dead" TriCaster allows you to merge video, stills, titles, overlays, and special effects - literally a live TV production truck in a small, low-cost system.

Streambase Systems at DEMO 2005

A number of DEMO'ers seems to be focusing on rapid application development. 10 minutes to a working application. Strembase Systems solution lets you drag and drop program elements into a flow diagram and the application is assembled in real time with no coding. Streambase built an application for tracking IBM stock prices, watching for conditions that suggest a buying or selling opportunity, making sales and purchases, and calculating the total money earned - all in real time.

Streambase can use RFID sensors to track in real time - no more lost kids at Disneyland for example. Tag your tots and track them, in real time.
